  1. The Paint files in this folder were mainly taken
  2. on October 14th, 1995, at Battle Abbey in East
  3. Sussex.
  4.  
  5. On that day there was a re-enactment of the Battle
  6. of Hastings.
  7.  
  8.  1 - the Saxons enter the field of battle.
  9.      Notice the shape of their shields and the 
  10.      weapons that are carried.
  11.      Look at the figure in the top left of the
  12.      photograph - an example of the similarities
  13.      between Norman and Saxon dress.

  16.      Notice the axe carried by the far figure.

  18.  3 - a Norman priest blesses soldiers.
  19.      How are the kneeling figures armed ?

  22.      Remember, the Saxon knights rode to battle and
  23.      then dismounted to fight.

  27.      The banner carried here is the papal banner,
  28.      presented to William. The banner is a gold
  29.      cross on white.
